REMAINING - Treasure of Memory
In early August I received an email from Susan Katz with CEC Artslink inviting me to participate in the 7th Annual Arts Prospect Festival.
I was fortunate enough to have traveled to Russia in 2012 as part of the first Arts Prospect Festival and installed two projects there, "BLUE" in St. Peterburg and "THE PARK OF LOVE" in Nizhny Novgorod.
This year's theme is "Treasure Hunt". My project will be included in the virtual presentation with former CEC Alumni from around the world to showcase each artist's work and response to this unusual moment in time.
My Proposal:
REMAINING
treasure of memory
During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic quarantine, I had the opportunity to go through my personal possessions (re)discovering the folder of photos my Mother had given me before her death in 2018. In the years prior to her death, she had carefully reviewed her collected family photographs giving her three children the images that best connected to each child. Often considered a person’s most valued belongings, old photographs capture moments in a life that can never be replicated. REMAINING is a selection of twenty pictures of my childhood from my Mother’s collection organized specifically for me. Continuing my art practice of memorializing lives that have been forgotten while embracing authentic history, these framed black and white snapshots represent the recalled utopian time of my youth in rural Alabama from 1961 to 1967. Text of the year, my name and others in the photo will accompany each respective installation.
After some consideration, this project was modified to reflect my neighborhood of Bray's Mill in Lawrenceville...in particular my street - Cedar Woods Way as my garage had became my studio in the most wonderful of ways. I also decided to include anyone who lives in the 17 houses on our street to participate with historic photographs that reflect their lives, loves, and losses. A great way to build community. All photographs will be framed and displayed on the 7 electrical posts from October 15-18.
Please continue to follow this blog for more information as this project unfolds.
